Our labour laws must be respected, regardless who the employer may be, be they foreign or local. It is the responsibility of the Government to ensure that such laws are respected and that the rights of workers are not trampled upon.
The current industrial dispute at Rusal has taken the issue of industrial relations to a new level where the company, according to media reports, has refused to meet with the relevant union and has even refused to meet with officials of the Labour Department. This is a dangerous precedent which should not be tolerated under any circumstances.
One is left to wonder whether the apparent disregard for our labour laws by Rusal has anything to do with the current political impasse in the country following the successful passage of the no-confidence vote. How else can one explain the dismissal of scores of workers and the treatment meted out to workers by the management team?
The entire country is looking on to see how this matter will be resolved.
