The formation of new political parties in Guyana in the run-up to anticipated General and Regional elections is most interesting. And even though the idea of new political parties to challenge the dominance of the two main parties is not something new, the prospects of oil in the foreseeable future has certainly added fresh impetus to create checks and balances in the governance process.
I have always held the view that the greatest of all freedoms is the freedom of choice.
In the final analysis, it is the individual that is sovereign, provided of course that such choices are done on the basis of free will.
The Guyanese electorate is now provided with a wider range of choices as to which political party is best suited to run the affairs of the country, and to the extent that is the case, it is a welcome development.
The Guyanese electorate is now awaiting the Manifestos of the political parties, which will allow them to make informed and intelligent choices. The challenge before us as a nation is how to rise above narrow partisan and ethnic considerations and vote on the basis of issues rather than ethnicity.
