Theresa May was expected to lose last night’s vote on her Brexit deal. What was stunning was the margin by which she lost.
The British parliament rejected her plan for exiting from the European Union. May lost by 230 votes with more than 230 parliamentarians, including 118 of her own Conservative Members of Parliament, voting against their own government. It was the biggest defeat for a government in more than 100 years.
Immediately, the opposition Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn indicated that he was filing a motion of no-confidence against the government. The Prime Minister has agreed to debate the motion today.
May is expected to survive that motion. The Democratic Unionist Party has indicated that it will support May’s government in any no-confidence motion. But given the number of Conservative MPs who revolted against their own government in the Brexit vote yesterday, another twist in the tale cannot be ruled out.
