An 11-year-old school dropout was buried alive at around 21:00 hrs on Thursday while illegally searching for gold in an 80-foot deep mining pit at Big Creek, North West District.
Police identified the victim as Tyrone Tyrell De Souza, of Big Creek, North West District.
According to reports, the owner of the pit ceased work on December 27, and left the area with his crew.
After they had left, De Souza and nine of his friends entered the pit and began scouring for gold. Their digging reportedly weakened a section of the structure, which collapsed, pinning De Souza.
The boy’s friends eventually managed to pull him out. He was taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
There is no indication that the lads will be charged, although they were on the claim illegally.
The Ministry of Natural Resources had recorded 14 mining deaths up to October of this year.
