A man whom the court heard jumped over the balcony at the Brickdam Police Station and made good his escape was yesterday sentenced to one year imprisonment for the offence.
Quincy Reynolds, 27, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where an escaping from lawful custody charge was read to him.
It is alleged that on December 20, last, at Brickdam Police Station, Reynolds while in custody for robbery, escaped.
An unrepresented Reynolds pleaded guilty but asked to explain after the charge was read to him.
In his explanation a visibility upset Reynolds stated, “The police beat me and I had to find a way out so I jumped over the verandah and run way.”
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh stated that on the day in question Reynolds was arrested and taken to the station for allegedly robbing Tenika Smith of a gold chain worth $60,000.
While in custody at the Brickdam Police Station Reynolds was behaving in a disorderly manner. When a police rank was attempting to restrain him, he managed to jump over the verandah and made good his escape, the prosecutor said.
An investigation was then carried out hence, he was arrested and taken back into custody.
Magistrate Daly sentenced Reynolds to one year in prison for the offence.
