A miner yesterday made an appearance before Senior Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl.
Thirty-six-year-old Shawn Cornelius, of Bartica, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleged that during September, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16.
The matter was held in camera.
According to information, during September the child was left in Cornelius’s care. It was during that period, Cornelius went home intoxicated and forced himself onto the nine-year-old and raped her.
The child then complained to her relatives, who reported the matter to the police.
An investigation was then carried out; Cornelius was arrested and charged.
The Magistrate remanded Cornelius to prison.
An unrepresented Cornelius was instructed to make his next court appearance on January 7, 2019 when he will appear in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
