Volunteers honoured for their services

Several young volunteers across the country were yesterday honoured for their contributions to helping those in need.
The ceremony undertaken by the Ministry of the Presidency, Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport, was held at the Umana Yana, in commemoration of International Volunteer Day (IVD).
This year’s theme, “Volunteers build Resilient Communities” focuses on strengthening local ownership and the resilience of the community in the face of natural disasters, economic stresses and political shocks.
The awardees and guests were treated to a cultural show which included dances and spoken word poetry.
Delivering the feature address, Alder Bynoe, Liaison Officer, UNFPA told the volunteers, “You help to enhance community knowledge, you allow for resilience in our community as well as for the overall people-centred development which will serve to benefit the development of the nation; it is through your efforts,” Bynoe said.
He noted that the acts of volunteerism continue to address the inequality gaps existing in society, hence the importance in honouring the contribution of volunteers in the development of their respective communities and the countries.

Bynoe cited the example of local volunteers who have sought to reduce the rate of teenage pregnancy, ensure adolescents have access to sexual and reproductive health services as well as raise the awareness of the many challenges faced by young people in the sphere of sexual and reproductive health.
A dedicated volunteer himself, Bynoe remarked, “once you are seriously committed about giving of yourself and serving those in need, that desire to serve never leaves you despite what new professional position you may take on later in life.”
Launched in 1985 by the United Nations, International Volunteer Day (IVD) observed on December 5 was designated to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organisations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities.
