Guyanese are caught between a rock and a hard place

DEAR EDITOR,

If the recently concluded Local Government Elections (LGE) is anything to go by, Guyanese are fed-up and disillusioned by the APNU+AFC Government of President David Granger. This disillusionment took just over three years to manifest itself.
What are Guyanese to do? Do we give the Coalition APNU+AFC Government more time to continue their missteps? Or, do we give the PPP/C another chance (with Bharrat Jagdeo effectively at the helm)? Is there a viable Third Force out there which can effectively manage the affairs of State?
Many Guyanese would say, as I do, a resounding “NO!” to all three questions asked above.
The only alternative is for the PPP/C and for the PNCR-led APNU+AFC (effectively, PNC) to stop fighting each other and start working together on solutions to Guyanese problems which are many but not insurmountable. Solutions are needed immediately on the question of Security (namely, crime reduction), electricity woes, water woes, health and education to name a few. But foremost attention should be placed on job creation which needs investment. Investment needs political, social and economic stability to thrive.
Guyana’s problems are not a money problem per se, in that if you throw US$100B at the problems they will not just disappear. It is a lack of political will and know-how.
So while the Coalition APNU+AFC Government would like to pretend that by awaiting the “oil money” to flow to fix Guyana’s problems, they simply need to wise-up and get real. The ordinary Guyanese is not about to get rich and experience ‘The Good Life’ with the pittance oil money. In any event, waiting two to three years for this to happen is unwise, as it may never happen.
What Guyanese want and need is a better Government so that our fledgling Democracy can flourish. Isn’t it time for the PPP and PNC to stop their childish fighting and work together for the betterment of all Guyanese under consensus politics?
