STEMGuyana provides training for out-of-school youths

Youths in Region Two through Six and Ten will soon receive a programme from STEM Guyana, aiming to equip them with skills for the working sector.
The ground-breaking programme which is scheduled to begin in December targets youths who are out of school and are unemployed. They will learn a series of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Robotics and Coding/computer programming.
This is an initiative of STEM Guyana in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport, the Ministry of Public Telecommunications and Ministry of Education. The objective is to equip more young people with marketable skills that will render them employable.
In the long term, organisers also expect that these youths should teach their skills to others.
A major factor of the programme not only caters for someone being able to become employed, but it caters for entrepreneurs. The Scratch programme allows students to learn the programming language and online community where technology students can create their own interactive stories, games and animations.
Organisers intend to use the Regional ICT hubs as training venues and would have included that the volunteers be responsible to ensure participants are transported to the venues.
Throughout the year, STEM Guyana has trained and certified youth leaders, teachers and many other representatives to encourage them to start technology clubs in their communities.
The STEM certification programme was the beginning of many outreaches which has been in support by The Office of The First Lady, Sandra Granger, various ministries and private companies.
STEM Guyana is led by Mr. Leon Caleb Christian, Ms. Karen Abrams, a start-up Inclusion Consultant, and Ms. Ima Christian.
