Junior Niles used his experience to good effect to win the feature event at the Diamond Mineral Water cycle meet which was contested yesterday.
Niles encountered fierce competition from his rivals in the race which pedaled off at Schoonord, West Bank Demerara and proceeded to Busy Park, East Bank, Essequibo before returning to the starting point for the finish. Due to the late arrival of the police patrol, the start of the event was delayed by 30 minutes.
Niles and Akeem Wilkinson, Deeraj Garbarran, Paul De Nobrega and Michael Anthony separated themselves from the bunch at Vreed-en-Hoop, while on their way to Bushy Park. They maintained that lead throughout the race until it came down to the last 200 meters where Niles sprinted his way to the finish line to win the race which spanned 46 miles in a time of one hour 41 minutes 25.47 seconds.
Wilkinson took the runner up spot while Garbarran placed third followed by De Nobrega, Anthony and Warren Mc Kay in that order. Wilkinson, Garbarran, Niles took two primes each.
Adealie Hodge won the junior category, while Emmanuel Gayral placed second and Briton John third. Niles also won the veterans segment ahead of Mc Kay and Alixas Mendes respectively. The Mountain Bike category was taken by Ozia McUllay, while Jamal Cappel placed second and Talim Shaw third. The oldest cyclist was Linden Blackman.
In an invited comment Niles said he made use of the early break he got and it was experience which carried him over the line ahead of the others. “I am happy with this victory, it definitely will motivate me to keep going, it’s over 32 years I am racing,” he added. Organiser and Coach Hassan Mohamed expressed gratitude to the sponsors.
