A local show aimed at tackling social ills in Guyana, and a platform where others can share testimonies of their life experiences, has been informing and inspiring changes in the lives of many who view it.
The Lady Wendy Show, as it is being called, is the brainchild of Wendy South, who hails from Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
The idea for such a show came about after its hostess (South) was seated in an internet café from where she overheard conversations between various persons and their relatives residing overseas. South related about how persons were pleading with their relatives to send money for them, and complaining of how challenging life is here.
So, an inquisitive South asked herself, “Why does it have to be this way? If I shifted their mindset maybe they can see things the way I do.” Soon after, South made preparations to have the show broadcast. The first episode was aired in February on the National Communications Network (NCN).
The first show titled “Youth on the move” featured two progressive entrepreneurs—Anjie Lambert and Dannon Lewis. From there on, many shows followed and featured topics like Generational Wealth, Self Love, Diabetes and High Blood Pressure Prevention, Betrayal and Forgiveness, Seniors on the Move, a very topical issue, Domestic Violence, and much more.
With Guyana being the only English-speaking country on the South American continent with a population of below a million, the Lady Wendy Show has recognized the impacts the scourge of domestic violence is having on families, communities, and by extension the country. It has also acknowledged that based on statistics the problem is elevating.
And with a need to address some of the need for resources, training, and awareness to address this cause, the show has launch a Gofundme page, with the aim of providing resources to empower women, create an understanding of the issue, and bring awareness through an in-depth documentary.
“Several professionals, who work day to day with domestic violence situations, were contacted to be a part of our show. And based on conversations with these professionals, this led to the three areas the monies will be used for,” Wendy disclosed. The show has had its fair share of challenges in getting off the ground, one being the lack of support from government entities.
The show has thought-provoking dialogue and topics to motivate its audiences to self-reflect and uncover their own personal strengths and weaknesses. It is believed that insights from the show can empower them with the tools needed to self-identify and recognize certain behavioural characteristics within themselves.
Nevertheless, the organizers are also willing to establish partnerships in an effort to work closely to make Guyana a better place. Furthermore, the show welcomes the participation from any individual or organization that is concerned with bringing about social changes.
Despite these challenges and setbacks, South confessed, “We at the Lady Wendy Show are very thankful for the love and support we have received from all sponsors, guests, public. We are honoured to serve Guyana: One Nation, One People, One Destiny!”
Using a variety of inspirational approaches, the Lady Wendy Show seeks to assist viewers with releasing past burdens and embracing their potential by adopting our simple concept to: Live! Laugh! Love!
