Dear Editor,
I refer to the Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo’s programme aired on HBTV Channel Nine on the eve of the Local Government Elections, in which he continued his desperate quest for his party to return to power.
Since this is now a daily staple of this politician, and will continue, there is no gain or value for any personal comment, as it is not worth any good time.
This Jagdeo’s criticism of theAPNU+AFC Coalition, consisted of two well-known former state media personnel who were prominent during the PPP/C administration.
The more senior of the two, a cultural artiste, Neaz Subhan, is a serving member of the important constitutional body, the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), tasked with what has to be the greatest challenge in Guyana – promoting unity in a society, which is sadly divided along ethnic and racial lines.
Editor, that I have decided to write on this particular matter, is because I am of the opinion that although those persons on the ERC were chosen for such a seminal mission, apart from recommendations, there may have been the understanding that they are to be above partisan politics – at least.
Although hardly anyone in this country can be found to be above politics, at least, there has to be a certain amount of non-partisanship shown by these eminent persons, particularly as members sitting on this commission.
Further, the gentleman is more than qualified to be a member of the ERC, as he is certainly an eminent exponent and commentator of the cultural dynamics of Guyana, and is more than capable of a worthwhile contribution.
One wonders whether his appearance on national television, in open alignment with a party and leader, whose political culture is patently racist; and one that embraces domination by race, does not send the wrong signals/message to a section of this nation, that has been brutally suppressed by a party and former government for 23 years.
Editor, though the odour of racism will take much time and effort of the collective Guyanese to be expunged from the national environment, especially with the likes of Jagdeo and the cohort of known supremacists in this nation, yet one should be able to hope for an improvement in a nation that needs to remove itself from this dangerous and destructive mind-set.
So, one is bound to ask whether a member of such a seminal body as the ERC, Neaz Subhan, appearing on a telecast, with a former leader who is well-known for his anti-cohesive position, can inspire public confidence in the ERC’s national quest in bringing about racial healing.
Regards,
Dillon Goring
