APNU Campaign Manager Valerie Adams-Yearwood, at a press briefing on Friday, said that all systems are in place for the upcoming Local Government Elections tomorrow, and expressed optimism of greater voter turnout than in 2016.
Detailing some of what her party has been doing in preparation for the auspicious day, Adams-Yearwood expressed satisfaction with the inroads made, and optimism of favourable results on E-Day.
Her chief concern however, was with the youths, whom she feels, are still not as knowledgeable of Local Government Elections, as they ought to be. This, she blamed on the absence of LGEs over the years.
“The 20-year hiatus in Local Government Elections has created an uphill challenge to get through to youths, who often confess that they know nothing of LGEs.
Young people have been saying that they don’t know anything about Local Government Elections; they know about National and Regional Elections.
“So in 2018, from day one, we set up a youth strategy team of sixty to seventy percent of young people, and they were allowed to strategize, because they understand young people like themselves. They are willingly volunteering to engage youths out there.”
Adams-Yearwood added that the APNU thought it fit and appropriate to have the involvement of all the residents in the eight constituencies to select who they want to be their APNU representative at the LGE.
She said that the party believed that the most transparent process was to go into each constituency, and have primaries run. This was done, she posited.
The Campaign Manager commended constituency seven for the most outstanding turnout during the primaries.
She said that prior to this; the APNU had done their signature campaign and identified locations where candidates had to bring their 30 supporters.
Strategy
“Our strategy wasn’t only public meetings. Our main focus was going into the streets and talking with the people. We have presently intensified this activity from Wednesday and continue into (today).”
Efforts to secure a comment from AFC Campaign Manager, Audwin Rutherford proved futile.
However, in an earlier comment Rutherford had expressed confidence with his team and pointed out that victory is not just winning the majority, but being there to represent the people and be the voice of the people.
“Our team – we have a mixture of youth and experience and we have maybe one of the better administrators of all the other teams put together,” Rutherford had boasted.
United Republican Party (URP) Representative Ian Halls had promised that his party will bring a lot of change to the Council and run it like a business to benefit the workers in terms of better salaries and improved services for residents.
“Trust the URP, give them a chance and we will ensure that the taxes that people pay- they will get value for their money,” Halls stated.
