Nov 04, 2018 Letters
Dear Editor
Please allow me to respond to a letter written in the newspaper on November 1, 2018 (Kaieteur News) captioned “A call for serious intervention to halt corruption” by Elton Mc Rae.
The residents of Beterverwagting and Triumph have never been more satisfied with the performance of the Beterverwagting Triumph NDC because of its many initiatives to better the livelihood of its villagers. The writer can be seen as someone who believes that his ways and his thinking are the only acceptable choice for development within our communities.
In 2016 when the Government started the construction of Surat Drive road in Triumph, Mc Rae and a few others were trying to have the construction halted because he came to the council insisting that the road is being constructed to nine feet wide and this must not be allowed to continue.
The works committee of the council then scheduled a meeting with Mc Rae and his team after much discussion we all venture out to Surat Drive to ascertain their claim, upon checking the first stop we found that the road was being built 11 feet wide, Mc Rae again said that we have to go a little further up because of his belief that the road is nine feet wide at some points. Councillors then proceeded to check three other sections of the road and found all to be 11 feet wide and not nine as Mc Rae and his team claimed.
Since he is now a candidate for the local government elections he is now on a mission to tarnish the character of people whose character can withstand scrutiny, but the villagers will reject him because of who he is. On the 12th November 2018 democracy will win and I am certain that the residents of Beterverwagting and Triumph will now make a better choice.
Editor, I also want to appeal to the chairman of the elections commission to investigate his list since there are persons who are there that should be disqualified from being elected as councillors but are still allowed to contest.
Neville Cumberbatch
Councillor
