A 27-year-old bandit was shot dead yesterday at Mahaicony, East Bank Demerara, after he and an accomplice crashed their stolen car and fled on horseback with a farmer they had abducted.
Police said that Melroy “Souse Mouth” Solomon, of Titus Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara was slain during a shootout with ranks, who had cornered them in a taxi near the Mahaicony public road. But the accomplice escaped and was still at large at press time.
Police said that Solomon was previously charged with armed robbery.
An unlicensed.32 semi-automatic pistol with four live rounds and two spent shells were recovered at the scene.
The drama began at around 10:50hrs at Fifth Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara, when the bandits allegedly robbed of a taxi driver of his car and personal items. They had initially hired him to take them to an East Coast Demerara location.
Police were alerted and ranks, in an unmarked vehicle, intercepted the car at Mahaicony.
The suspects reportedly discharged several rounds which struck the police vehicle. They then fled into Esau & Jacob Village, Mahaicony, but were forced to abandon the vehicle after it got stuck in a ditch.
After fleeing into the backlands, the men allegedly relieved a farmer of his phone and clothes, then forced him to take them on a horse to Branch Road Mahaicony, which leads to the public road.
Police said that the perpetrators then boarded a taxi but were again intercepted by ranks, who ordered them out of the vehicle.
However, one of the suspects exited with firearm drawn and began shooting at the police, who returned fire during which the gunman (Solomon) was shot.
His accomplice escaped in the car.
The injured bandit was pronounced dead at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital.
