Roxanne Myers sworn in as Deputy Chief Elections Officer
Roxanne Myers was yesterday sworn in as Deputy Chief Elections Officer (DCEO), after taking the oath before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The swearing comes months after Myers was appointed to the post. After taking the oath, Myers declined to answer questions posed to her by reporters.
Her appointment has been a source of controversy, with the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) expressing the view that the hiring practice at the electoral body is race-based.
GECOM commissioners for the opposition, Robeson Benn, Sase Gunraj and Bibi Shaddick had favoured Vishnu Persaud, who held the post up to 2017 when his contract expired. Persaud was the top-ranked candidate for the job, but using the existing process at the Commission, Chairman Justice (Retired) James Patterson used his casting vote on the seven-member Commission, against Persaud’s appointment.
The number-two ranked applicant, who was Myers, received support from Patterson and the Government Commissioners, Desmond Trotman, Vincent Alexander and Charles Corbin.
The PPP has formally lodged a complaint with the Ethnic Relations Commission about what the party believes is a racial imbalance at GECOM.
