Fifty percent of jobs are expected to be automated by 2025, according to First Lady Sandra Granger. The First Lady said on Wednesday that based on a study that assessed the effect of the advancement of the robotics industry on the workforce, by the year 2025 machines as opposed to the 29 percent today would perform more than half of all current workplace tasks.
The statement made at the Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, initiated the launching of STEM’s “Reading and Robotics”.
Mrs. Granger in her address explained that as much as these advancements are beneficial for the country, individuals would need to reassess how applicable their skills are in their time whilst the younger generation will have to be equipped as from this moment with the necessary skills to compete in the global market.
The First Lady highlighted the importance of young girls entering into the robotics arena as the field sees male students dominate coding.
STEM Guyana aims to diminish a perspective that the public often has for robotics. They are seeking to unlock the potential of all Guyanese youths, not just male students but females as well.
Mrs. Granger reiterated the urgency in students choosing career paths that will be applicable to the future needs of society. She emphasized the role that the field of robotics is already playing in the country. There are drone technology, medicine and so many other aspects.
According to the study done by the World Economic Forum (WEF), the fifty percent increase may see a net gain in new roles for humans who in turn will have to revamp their skills to keep pace with the “seismic shift” in how work is done with machines and computer programmes.
Therefore, the First Lady is urging students to realign their skills with what will be in demand in society.
