Retrial of former death row inmate begins

Several months after the Court of Appeal overturned a conviction and death sentence imposed on Terry Kissoon after he was convicted for murder; he is back in court facing a retrial before Justice Sandil Kissoon and a 12-member mixed jury.

Back in 2013, the former death row inmate was sentenced to death after he was convicted of the July 30, 2010 murder of Troy Smith.
However, in July, the Court of Appeal remitted the case back to the High Court for a new trial. On Monday, State Prosecutor Lisa Cave presented the indictment for murder to which Terry Kissoon pleaded not guilty.
The murder accused is being represented by Senior Counsel Bernard DeSantos.
Based on reports, Terry Kissoon had visited the Lot 108 Thomas Street, Kitty, Georgetown home of Smith and accused him of stealing his motorcycle. During the confrontation, Terry Kissoon reportedly told Smith that he had one day to return his property.
According to information, this led to a heated argument between the two during which Smith was shot to the abdomen. Terry Kissoon reportedly fled the scene after, and the injured man was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
