Honey is slowly replacing the sugar bottles in many homes. Not only does honey contain an abundance of antioxidant, it helps improves cholesterol and lower triglycerides.
In this regard, one local entrepreneur is on a mission to ensure that honey becomes a part of everyone’s diet.
Her name is Joenitta Arthur. She is 23 years of age and hails from Silver City, Linden.
Her idea for becoming a businesswoman and producing all natural honey was birthed about two years ago.
According to her, “Honey is something I use regularly. It is a healthy product. So in an effort to get people to use honey I went along this path.”
In April 2018, Arthur launched Suncrest Farms Rainforest Honey at “MarketPlace Uncapped”, an event aimed at promoting local products, which was hosted by the Guyana Manufacturing Services Association (GMSA).
When asked to detail her honey extract process, Arthur revealed that the honey hives are located deep in the rainforest of the Demerara River. She added that this location has proven suitable since it is away from pollutants and human disturbances.
This entrepreneur, however, confessed that hive managements has been a challenge.
She said, “Honey bees are not friendly. It really takes a lot of effort to manage hives effectively. So you really have to be into it to not get frustrated.”
Nevertheless, the honey is vegetarian, all natural, and fat free, with no added sugar or preservatives and therefore worth the effort. Arthur assured too that while many locally produced honeys have added sugar, her product is internationally certified and has been proven to be 100 percent pure honey.
While the business is managed by Arthur’s family, she is looking to expand very soon by adding honey by-products to her brand, and also exporting throughout the region.
Commenting on the progress in business, Arthur stated, “Since I launched at Uncapped, business has been good. The Guyana Marketing Corporation and the Guyana Manufacturers Association have played a big role in marketing the products.”
Arthur was commended by this publication for her creatively in selecting an appropriate label for her produce. To this end, she explained that first impression counts and creating something appealing to the eyes was of importance.
“The aim is not only to create something that taste good, but something that looks good. The purpose is not only to sell honey, but to inform people of its health benefits through labeling,” she pointed out.
She advises budding entrepreneurs that getting into business takes a lot of planning. According to her, “As long as you have ideas, sit down and think them through. It can be stressful at times but it is very rewarding.”
Suncrest Farms Rainforest Honey can be purchased from all major supermarkets around Georgetown.
