The recent vandalism of four tombs in the La Belle Alliance Cemetery has sent chills down the spines of residents on the Essequibo Coast. The four tombs vandalized were located within close proximity of each other at the back of the La Belle Alliance Cemetery.
Three of the four tombs were initially broken into four days ago; the fourth was broken into yesterday morning. It was observed that the tombs were all broken in from the head side. The corpses were all skeletal remains; and the heads of two females were missing. Though the caskets of the two male corpses appeared intact, residents who peeked in for themselves claimed that the skulls were also removed. It is believed that the perpetrator(s) defaced the grave stones on the tombs, allegedly to conceal the identity of the dead remains.
One of the tombs held the dead remains of Campton Britton, who died in 2012. In another vandalized tomb just a few feet away, lay the remains of Sarah Garraway. Campton was the son-in-law of Sarah Garraway and they both resided in Danielstown on the Essequibo Coast.
In the tomb that was vandalized yesterday morning, lay the remains of a female, who can only be identified by the last name ‘Persaud.’ The identity of the corps in the fourth tomb, however, remains unknown at this time.
In the meantime, the family members of Sarah Garraway and Campton Britton were totally unaware that the tombs of their loved ones were vandalized. They were only made aware of the ordeal after publication reached out to them, and a police report was subsequently made.
Residents on the other hand are concluding that based on the evidence of the missing skulls, the vandalizing of the tombs surrounds a superstitious ritual. Though the practice is uncommon on the Essequibo Coast, it does leave a number of questions looming over the minds of residents.
Families are now to rebury what is left of the corpses.
