Dear Editor,
I wish to respond to the letter captioned “Continuous mistreatment of students and staff at the Guyana School of Agriculture” in the Monday, September 17, edition of this newspaper.
In my view, the article is seemingly one that is intended to be mischievous. I am an alumnus of GSA, and I have been employed there for the past 14 years.
In my capacity as the Monitoring and Evaluation focal point person, I am privy with the modus operandi at all levels of the Guyana School of Agriculture‘s operation.
Editor, I can inform you of the invaluable contribution that the management team of this School is constantly making to make GSA a better place for the student and staff. I will give you a brief highlight of some of the recent developments. Two million dollars have been spent to purchase books for the library and the numbers of routers on the campus have been increased. Students and staff can access the AGORA database. Improvements are been made on the farms to allow for climate resilience, a new shade house with dimension of 140ft by 20ft has been constructed to provide training in protected agriculture and modern irrigation tube has been procured. Major rehabilitative work has been done on several buildings on the campus including the dormitories, cafeteria, laboratory and the Information Technology Department that provides services to students. The ongoing curriculum reform process is geared towards making the training more relevant. A broiler pen and sanitary facilities have been constructed at the Essequibo campus. New equipment has been purchased for the Cafeteria and the Agro –Processing Unit. In keeping with the Green Initiative the School’s Agro – Processing unit is benefiting from a 10,000 kws grid solar PV system.
Editor, the writer is seemingly giving the impression that the Director of Administration is the person who solely deals with disciplinary matters. I wish to inform you that the School has rules, and whenever they are broken, a team comprising of top management staff deals with those matters collectively. The writer mentioned about a specific incident involving a student, I wish to inform you that GSA has an evidenced based policy and follow due process when dealing with disciplinary matters.
Editor, I do not want to take up too much of your space to elaborate on the other remarks made by the writer, but I find the writer to be very disrespectful with the words that were used to describe the Chief Executive Officer. The Chief Executive Officer is a very respectable and industrious gentleman who set high standards and go the extra mile for GSA.
The Chief Executive Officer and the Director of Administration does not deserve the criticisms made by the writer. The writer should take time off to recognize the invaluable contributions that are being made by the two gentlemen that comprise of the School’s top management team.
Yours sincerely,
Mr.Seeraj Samsundar :Lecturer/ Farm Manager
