Brickdam cop says gun went missing after left in police vehicle

Cornell Paul, 21, a Constable attached to Impact Base at the Brickdam Police Station, was yesterday charged and released on $150,000 bail for allegedly stealing a gun from the Force.
Paul, of 2434 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, denied the charge which stated that on February 3, last, at Impact Base, Brickdam Police Station, he stole one .38 special revolver worth $175,000, six .38 ammunition worth $750 and one holster worth $60,000.
He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a-Fat in a successful attempt to secure bail for his client stated that on February 3, last, his client was on duty at the Brickdam Police Station, when he booked out the firearm and the other articles mentioned in the charge.
The lawyer added that his client placed the articles in a vehicle, but soon after left the vehicle to collect something in his room.
Fung-a-Fat added that when his client returned to the vehicle, he observed the articles missing, and he immediately reported the matter to the Sergeant-in-charge at the station.
The lawyer argued that there were six other officers in the vehicle when the incident occurred and anyone could have removed the articles. He added that as such, his client should not have been criminally charged; instead, the matter should have been dealt with departmentally.
Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers made no objection to bail being granted to the defendant, but asked that conditions be attached.
The Magistrate after listening to the Prosecutor, instructed Paul to report every Friday at the Brickdam Police Station until the completion of the trial.
The matter was adjourned until August 24.
