There is a popular concept, which says that whatever a child learns from age zero to eight, is often the lessons that will play an immense role in molding him/her into a better adult. Hence the need for quality early childhood development is important, if we are to see a future generation of intelligent adults.
The recently commissioned Early Childhood Development Centre at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, is now the newest facility which will aid in positively moulding the minds of young children in Region Three [Essequibo Islands/ West Demerara].
The new $36.5 million building was commissioned by the Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan, on Saturday. Also present at the commissioning were Regional Executive Officer of Region Three, Dennis Jaikaran; representatives of the Childcare and Protection Agency, Zalaika Williams; and the Regional Education Officer of Region Three. The daycare institution caters for children from the age of three years old to five years old. The services provided are up to standard with the requirements of the Childcare protection agency. The facility includes multiple washrooms, a bathroom, a laundry room, a kitchen, an activity room and even a waiting area. The centre, according to Minster Jordan, is the fifth commissioned for the year. Kaieteur News understands the Childhood Development Centre projects are funded by the Basic Needs Trust Fund through the Caribbean Development Bank, and the Government of Guyana. The project includes not only the construction of the buildings, but also the training of some 65 youths, eight of whom will be employed at the Anna Catherina Centre. Speaking at the commissioning, Minister Jordan revealed that the project has two objectives. The first objective, he said, is to create comprehensive learning spaces for children of the community, from infancy to the age of five.
“We want them to grow up in such a way that they can have proper knowledge seeded in their mind so that they can grow up to be better men and women… We are creating a structural and stable approach for the development of our children; one that will guide them through teenage and adulthood.”
The second objective, the Minister pointed out, was that the Centre will train and generate job opportunity for youths. REO Jaikaran said that his regional administration, also has a duty to maintain and sustain the Centre for years to come.
Jaikaran added, “Within a week from now we are going to conclude, and form an unofficial board to manage the affairs of the centre. The board will comprise representatives of the regional administration, the Department of Education, the trainees, the Ministry of Health and the programme from Childcare Protection Agency.” (Romario Blair.)
