Nightclub owner remanded for ganja in cupboard

A popular nightclub owner was Friday remanded to prison after police found over 42 pounds of marijuana hidden in a cupboard in the kitchen of his nightclub.
Clyde Barrett, 40, of 183 Calendar Street, Albouystown, and the owner of City Vibes Club appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He denied the charge which alleged that on July 17 at Albouystown, he had in his possession 19.288 kilograms of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Attorney-at-law Mark Conway in an application to secure bail for his client, told the court that his client has no previous matters and no conviction.
He added that his client spent in excess of 72 hours in custody and fully cooperated with the investigators.
The lawyer went on to tell the court that if bail is granted to his client, he would subject himself to any conditions by the court.
Police Prosecutor, Neville Jeffers, objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing that no special reason was outlined by his lawyer.
He added that on July 17 last, ranks from the Narcotics branch went to the popular nightclub and conducted a search in and around the premises.
While the prosecutor told the court that no marijuana was found in the nightclub, he added that a search was conducted in the kitchen where the narcotic was found in a cupboard after the defendant provided them with the key.
The court heard that a black bag containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana was unearthed in several transparent plastic bags.
Barrett when told of the offence, denied possession. He was arrested and taken into custody.
The Magistrate after listening to the prosecutor submission told the court that she found no special reason to grant the defendant bail; hence, she remanded him to prison.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on August 8.
