Local agro-processors were given the opportunity to showcase their products last Friday, when the New Guyana Marketing Corporation (NGMC) held a sensitisation programme at New Amsterdam, Berbice.
This was the first time the NGMC visited Berbice to sensitise the public on the availability of locally manufactured products in Guyana. It was one of the several promotional events planned for the year.
Mr. Kevin Macklingham, Manager of the Guyana Shop, along with some of the staff of the New Guyana Marketing Corporation and Agro Processing Department, journeyed to Main Street, New Amsterdam where they hosted sensitisation and promotional activities.
The aim of the activity is to continually promote locally manufactured products and local entrepreneurs in Guyana and to make Berbice aware of these products.
“This is the first series of activities for this part (Region Six),” Mr Macklingam disclosed.
“Persons showed keen interest in the products we took up to Berbice last Friday. They were especially interested in the local soaps, herbal teas, sauces,” Macklingham explained as he expressed how impressed he was with the interest showed by residents.
“They asked questions about the products; they asked where the products can be found; so many questions. I am happy that these questions are being asked. It shows that people are interested in local products.”
Anne Bristol, owner of Anne’s Products; Joenitta Arthur, owner of Rainforest Honey, Shania Evans, a representative from Indigenous Oils and a few other agro-processors were in attendance.
“This activity was a success on our (Indigenous Coconut Oil) behalf. We got the opportunity to showcase our products and also educate customers on the benefits of our products and the aim behind our brand,” Evans said.
“GMC has played a huge role in our community when it comes to us getting to promote our products. And I am happy to be able to participate in this promotional and sensitization activity,” she continued.
Additionally, the Guyana Shop was able to secure a corner at B’s Mart for local products and is expected to start supplying the supermarket with items within the next two weeks.
“The people of New Amsterdam, within the next two weeks, will be able to shop 100 percent locally manufactured products from B’s Mart,” Macklingam revealed. “I am thankful to the owner of B’s Mart for understanding the importance of selling local products and supporting local manufacturers,” he added.
There were products such as green seasoning, honey, coconut oil, various skin products, soaps, cassava bread and porridge mix on display.
