Dear Editor,
Please allow me space in your letter column to extend congratulations to Mr. Christopher Ram on his completion of his Masters in Oil and Gas at the Reading University. While Reading University is not part of the elite Russell group of Universities in the UK, it has had university status since 1926 and is well respected in the UK.
Unlike the polytechnics, Buckingham University, Nottingham Trent University and University of Aberdeen etc. which all struggle to attract quality academics or students.
I’ve read about Mr. Ram since I was in diapers. He came across as quite humble and objective. Even though he supported the APNU-AFC in the last election he was not hesitant to be critical of them in the process of appointing the Chairman of the Election Commission. I supported the stand he took and have great admiration for him being objective and not blinded by political allegiance.
I am quite sure Mr. Ram is humble enough to recognise that one year of class studies in oil and gas does not make him an expert or consultant. I am a consultant in the UK and it took me 13 years of postgraduate studies to achieve that status.
Also I work in the UK’s fourth largest and at one time Europe largest teaching hospital. This hospital is the only hospital in the UK that houses a medical school on its campus namely Nottingham University Medical School (not the same as the polytechnic Nottingham Trent University). I work with world renowned consultants and professors who achieved their status after over 15 years of postgraduate studies and research.
I say the above to highlight and educate the Guyanese public about those who are masquerading as consultants and experts without the required qualifications.
In closing I should share an experience I had while I worked at the GPHC. There was this doctor who would masquerade as a surgical consultant after only completing a one-year Masters in Surgery. I saw many patients suffered under his knife. His complication rates were quite high. No one could have done anything because of his political connections. He was made medical director at GPHC. Quite a travesty.
Once again, Congrats Mr. Ram. You are old enough to be my dad hence the reason for addressing you as Mr. Ram.
Regards,
Dr. Mark Devonish MBBS MSc MRCP(UK)
Consultant Acute Medicine
Nottingham University Hospital
