Four suspects are now in police custody after an alleged shoot-out with ranks on their police mobile patrol vehicles.
According to a high ranking police source, ranks in Berbice received a tip-off and were about to intercept a hire car with four male suspects who are known to the police. The men after noticing the police, allegedly sped ahead while the ranks gave chase.
The car reportedly ended up in a muddy ditch and the suspects exited the car and attempted to escape on foot.
Divisional Commander Lyndon Alves told the media that the men shot at the police and they returned fire. They were all apprehended subsequently but no firearms were recovered. The hire car used by the men was impounded at the Albion Police Station Compound.
Previously, the police had stated that there was no shootout but rather an explosion was heard coming from the car. Another senior police said that after the suspects sped away, the police “challenged” the men.
Investigations are ongoing.
