After a memorial service at the Brickdam Cathedral on Wednesday, relatives and friends of those who lost their lives in the Lindo Creek massacre gathered at Square of the Revolution to march in remembrance.
Although faced with inclement weather, the walk began at Square of the Revolution at noon and proceeded along Vlissingen Road towards Le Repentir Cemetery.
After arrival at the cemetery, the family and friends visited the tombs and shared comforting words to those who still have the deaths fresh in their minds. There were tears and balloons were released in the air, as part of the 10th anniversary observances.
The men, Bonny Harry, Horace Drakes, Dax Arokium, Cecil Arokium, Nigel Torres, Clifton Wong, Lancelot Lee and Compton Spiers, were killed, then burnt at a mining camp at Lindo Creek, Upper Berbice River on or about June 21, 2008.
The killings saw the Coalition Government ordering an Inquiry to determine who was culpable. There were accusations that army ranks were involved. Others said it was wanted man, Rondell ‘Fineman’ Rawlins who was hiding up in the Upper Berbice River area, at the time.
Rawlins was later killed in the Timehri area.
