– Phones, other items found
Some inmates at the Lusignan holding facility have taken up gardening—but Prison authorities are not too happy with this enterprising venture. That’s because the inmates have included marijuana among their crops.
The venture came to light on Monday during a three-hour search by joint services ranks at the Lusignan Prison. They also searched the holding facility, where inmates were transferred after the disastrous torching of the Camp Street penitentiary.
It was at the holding facility that the ranks spotted a marijuana plant, which the inmates had cleverly concealed among pepper and tomato plants. They also seized three Ziploc bags containing cannabis, a small bottle of cannabis seeds and a packet of cigarettes.
The joint services also found eight cell phones; ten cell phone batteries; five cell phone chargers; two SIM cards, two memory cards; seven phone cards; 31 improvised weapons; 11 pieces of metal pipe, nine pieces of wood; a tattoo machine and ink.
A senior Prison official said that while there appears to be a reduction in cases of individuals throwing prohibited items over the prison walls, ranks are “still struggling” to intercept these items, which are also smuggled in.
