Serial robber, Ryan Bannister, was yesterday jailed for seven years while co-accused Roy Smith and Jerrold Da Silva were remanded for last Wednesday’s armed robbery at a Grove, East Bank Demerara supermarket.
Magistrate Sunil Scarce handed down the sentence after the 27-year-old Herstelling, East Bank Demerara accused pleaded guilty to armed robbery and unlawful possession of arms and ammunition during his appearance in the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
Bannister is also before the court in connection with a June 2016 armed robbery at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
He was also among several Lusignan Prison inmates who were wounded in August 2017, during an attempt on the life of another prisoner.
Meanwhile, co-accused Roy Smith, 33, of Herstelling Sea Dam, East Bank Demerara, and Jerrold Da Silva, 45, of Coverden, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to armed robbery and were remanded.
They are due to return to court on August 14.
Da Silva and Banister were among four men who were arrested in June 2015, following two separate robberies on the West Coast of Demerara.
Around 04:00 hrs last Wednesday, Bannister, Smith, and Da Silva allegedly broke into the Number One Supermarket at Lot 18 Grove Public Road, after tying up the on-duty guard.
They then placed him in a bathroom at the back of the building before proceeding to the top of the three-storey premises, via the back steps.
However, the 53-year-old guard managed to untie his bonds and alert residents, who summoned ranks from the Grove Police Station.
On arriving, the ranks realised that the intruders were still inside. They called for backup and more ranks arrived and surrounded the building.
After a 45-minute standoff, the bandits surrendered and were detained.
Police said that a .38 revolver with six live matching rounds as well as a quantity of phone cards and a sum of cash were recovered from the suspects.
