‘End Domestic Violence’ echoed in youth march

In an effort to address domestic violence, participants of the Upper East-Bank Youth Group recently held a rally to bring awareness to the social ill which has, so far, claimed the lives of close to a dozen women.
The small group of participants, who were clad in purple t-shirts, marched from Supply, East Bank Demerara, to Soesdyke, while holding banners and placards stating: “We won’t wait! End Domestic Violence!”
Noting that there are many social issues in her community, co-founder of the group Keoma Sutton expressed gratitude to the individuals who showed support for the march. She however assured that the group has planned several other activities which would be beneficial to villages spanning between Supply and Soesdyke.
According to her, “We are looking to increase the group membership in order to reach out to more residents. We have a lot more activities planned which will engage children and the elderly.”
Persons who participated in the awareness march said it is a good initiative, which will only grow bigger.
“I feel good because every day you read in the papers and see what is going on,” one participant said.
Another participant Leroy Watson exclaimed, “I feel very confident and powerful towards this march. Growing up I saw a lot of abuse going on in homes. I am glad that the community can come out together and do something like this. Violence against women and children needs to stop.”
Expressing that she felt excited about partaking in the march, one young lady who gave her name as Aaliyah, said that the domestic violence is not only affecting Guyana, but also countries across the globe. She said, too, “We should stand firmly against domestic violence!”
