A junior staff attached to Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) who allegedly collected money from several individuals, by promising them house and land was yesterday slapped with two fraud charges.
Tiana Gibbons, of 383 Fifth Street, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first allegation stated that between February 8 and February 17 at Water Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, she obtained from Tashana Jerrick $170,000 by falsely pretending that she was in a position to grant her a house and land located at Dazzell Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, knowing same to be false.
It was further alleged that between February 20 and March 15 at Water Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, she obtained from Jevon Thomas $205,000 by falsely pretending that she was in a position to grant her a house and land located at Dazzle Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, knowing same to be false.
She denied both allegations after they were read to her by the Magistrate.
Police Prosecutor, Arvin Moore had no objections to bail being granted to the defendant.
The court heard that the victims were introduced to the defendant by a friend and she told them that she was going to provide them with documents for them to acquire houses and lands at a cheap price.
The victims them handed over the monies mentioned in the charge to the defendant who give them certain documents for them to acquire the lands.
The prosecutor added that it was only recently that the victims realised that the documents were not authentic so they went and reported the matter to the police.
An investigation was then carried out and the defendant was arrested for the offence.
Magistrate Latchman after listening to the prosecutor granted the defendant bail in the sum of $200,000.
The mother of one was instructed to make her next court appearance on June 25, for statements.
