Guyana’s Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis’, who is the Caribbean lightweight champion, dream of attaining a medal at the Gold Coast, XXI Commonwealth Games ended contentiously after losing by unanimous decision to South African Sinethemba Blom in his Light Welterweight second round fight during the weekend.
Superman had gotten past a familiar foe in St Lucia’s Nathan Ferrari in the first round of the tournament being hosted by Australia, only to be cheated with several low-blow punches from the South African in the round-of-16 bout. Although Blom had points deducted from his tally, he still won but the low-blows would’ve definitely taken a toll on the Guyanese’s performance.
At the end of the three rounds, only one of the five judges scored the fight in favour of Lewis.
Head of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, speaking to Kaieteur Sport, maintained his belief that, “Lewis give a very stellar performance. In my mind I thought he won the fight but obviously the judges thought differently. He was punched several times below the belt which forced him to change his fight plan a bit since his opponent was acting almost with impunity.”
Ninvalle further noted that this is Superman’s first major boxing meet and that he will just get better in the future, “He will be back with a bigger bang on the boxing scene!”
