Gunmen raid Cuyuni camp, kill Dominican Republic miner

Police have launched an intense manhunt for three gunmen who killed a Dominican Republic miner around 02:00 hrs yesterday during a brazen attack on a camp at Black Water Backdam, Cuyuni/Mazaruni.
Police identified the victim as Pedro Pablo Rosario, 55. Indications are that the gunmen escaped with an undisclosed quantity of gold.
The camp in which the attack occurred is said to be owned by a Kitty dredge owner.
According to reports, Rosario was relaxing in a hammock when the gunmen entered the camp and shot him. They then held the other employees at gunpoint before fleeing with two mats from the operation’s sluice box.
The killing occurs at a time when Government has sent security forces to the Cuyuni/Mazaruni and other areas in the wake of escalating attacks on miners and other businesses in the area.
Just recently, a group of miners appealed, via newspaper advertisement, for “urgent help”.
According to the advertisement, miners operating in the Cuyuni River, which separates Guyana and Venezuela, are being threatened by the operations of the Venezuela-based ‘Sindicato’ gang.
They alleged that gang members are demanding food, cash and other valuables from miners in exchange for safe passage.
According to the advertisement, the gang was demanding a gram of gold for every five drums of fuel that had to pass.
A few weeks ago, the Sindicato reportedly moved down-river and set up a camp on the Venezuela side of the river, about three miles from Eteringbang.
Government officials have announced that more law enforcement officers are being dispatched to interior locations of Region One (Barima-Waini) close to the Guyana/Venezuela border.
