The blackout continues in Region Two [Pomeroon/Supenaam], as consistent load shedding continues to plague the entire Essequibo Coast.
Over the past week, the inadequate supply of power by the Guyana Power and Light [GPL], has severely affected Essequibians, especially business owners. According to reports, some communities along the coast experience long hours of power outages during the day, while others are affected in the nights.
Business owners are complaining bitterly about the losses they continue to incur daily, as a result of these frequent power outages. It is unclear to Essequibians at this moment, the reason behind the frequent blackouts, since GPL recently acquired four rented sets, which were supposedly to end the blackout nightmares.
Sometime last month, however, the state-owned Power Company issued a release which indicated that the frequent power outages were linked to fuel related issues. The interruptions then, according to the company, was referred to as ‘trips,’ and lasted for approximately 15 minutes.
It is unclear at this time whether or not these ‘fuel’ related issues were resolved, since all efforts to contact the company’s public relations officer, again proved futile.
Sometime mid last year, the power grid within the Pomeroon/Supenaam region was converted from 50 hertz, to 60 hertz. This necessitated the rental of four Caterpillar sets, which provided generation compatible with the converted network.
Upon visiting the site yesterday, however, it was discovered that one of the generators was removed. It remains unclear at this time as to where this generator was relocated to, though there are claims that this missing set was moved to Bartica.
GPL in its release last month noted that three new 1.78 Megawatts generators have been acquired by the company, but were not put into operation. The new generators are currently being assembled, and will be commissioned with the new power plant at the end of the second quarter in 2018. [Romario Blair.]
