Residents of Lima Sands on the Essequibo Coast, continue to question the interest of the secular authorities, after their concerns about a poorly constructed road, appears to have gone unheard.
Lima Sands is home to more than over 300 Essequibians. It is located just a few miles inland from the Essequibo Coast main road.
This road construction is “supposedly” to satisfy the needs of residents in this predominantly farming and mining community.
According to residents, however, there appears to be major defects with the entire construction programme. Residents noted that the narrowness of the road is the key defect on the project. One resident explained to this publication that there are times when heavy trucks would have to reverse in an effort to give way to approaching traffic.
Residents are also claiming that the sand and loam material used as reinforced agents along the road are already washing away.
Kaieteur News understands that the matter was brought to the attention of the Region Two Executive Officer, Rupert Hopkinson, via an e-mail. Claims are, however, that the REO took no action to rectify the issue.
Regional Chairman, Devenand Ramdatt, added, “I wrote the REO two times on this matter. At that stage, loam was laid on the road and so corrective actions could have been taken. Now we are coming back here to see no corrective actions were taken by the REO and the Engineer.”
According to reports, the project was budgeted for at $8.2 million. It was noted, however, that the project cost was less than $6M. Residents are stressing that they should’ve been consulted before works commenced within their community, underlining the fact that adequate consultation would have cushioned a suitable design.
One resident noted, “Nobody ever talk to us saying that they going to do road. All we see people come in, grade out and put in…Now we have a road two vehicles can’t even pass side by side, even more so with people on the road.”
