Two men were yesterday remanded to prison after charges for trafficking marijuana were brought against them.
The duo appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where they pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
Udok Anthony Nedd, 35, of Lot 121 Campbellville Housing Scheme, Georgetown; and Keron Jordan, 24, of Lot 3043 North Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown were charged separately. It is alleged that on March 27, at Campbellville Housing Scheme, Georgetown, Nedd, a caterer, had 444 grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his possession for trafficking.
The charge against Jordan, a taxi driver, alleged that on the same day at North Ruimveldt Georgetown, he had 1378 grams of cannabis sativa in his possession for trafficking. Both of the men pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to them by Magistrate Leron Daly.
According to facts presented in court, on the day in question, police ranks from the Narcotics Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, acting on information went to Lot 121 Campbellville, Georgetown, where they met Nedd. After requesting permission from Nedd to search the premises, police ranks proceeded to the kitchen area where they found two transparent plastic parcels each containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana.
As a result, Nedd was then cautioned by police ranks. He reportedly told them, “Is me own officer. I gon’ deal with it.” The alleged drug trafficker was then arrested and taken to CID headquarters where the suspected narcotics were weighed in his presence.
In relation to Jordan, he was the driver of a motorcar HC 6001, which was intercepted by police ranks on Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown; in the vicinity of the Garage Restaurant. Police ranks searched the vehicle and found a multi coloured haversack in the back seat with a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
Under caution, Jordan told the police that a man had given him the haversack to take to ‘Black Boy.”
Jordan, too, was arrested and taken to CID Headquarters. As it relates to Nedd, Magistrate Daly refused to grant him bail based on the facts presented by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh.
Both men will make their next court appearance on April 14.
