Three men on Wednesday appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh and at the Number 51 Magistrate Court before Magistrate Charlyne Artiga for several charges in connection with a spate of robberies that took place on the Corentyne recently.
The men had on Monday turned themselves over to police in the company of their Attorney, Charrandass Persaud. They were allegedly part of a gang that has been terrorizing residents on the Corentyne, one member of the gang was captured at Topoo, Albion on Sunday after they pounced on a family at Albion, High Reef, Corentyne, Berbice.
The men, Suraj ‘Ravi’ Kowlessar, 21, a Construction worker of Ankerville, Port Mourant; Vishal ‘Michael’ Ramdass, 20, a labourer also of Ankerville, Port Mourant; and Matthew ‘Abel’ Prasad, 26, of Number 77 Village; were slapped with six counts of robbery under arms at the Number 51 Magistrate Court while at the Reliance Magistrate Court on the said day, they were charged with one count of possession of illegal firearm, one count of possession of illegal ammunition, three counts of discharging a loaded firearm and three counts of robbery under arms.
At the Number 51 Magistrate Court, standing in the prisoner’s dock and shackled together, the men were charged with the February 16, 2018 robbery at Ankerville, Port Mourant. The victim was Shanta Dudhnauth.
Other charges read that they robbed Anthony Dudhnauth,and Shashi Dudnauth. They were further charged with robbery under arms committed on Saturday 3rd February at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice. The victim was Raveena Ram.
Also on Saturday 3rd February at Port Mourant, they allegedly robbed Jankee Bisnauth and Navini Deoki.
At the Reliance Magistrate’s Court, the trio was also read charges by Magistrate Singh for being in possession of a .32 Smith and Wesson revolver without being the holder of a firearm licence and also for being in possession of two live .32 rounds on the 24th March, 2018.
The charges were read separately and detailed that on the 24th March while in the company of others and armed with three guns and one cutlass at Sand Reef Albion, Corentyne they robbed Ganga Persaud Ganesh called ‘Ramesh’, Aryan Ally, and Balram Lakeram.
Two counts of discharging a loaded firearm were also read to the men. This was committed on Jagdeo Ganesh of High Reef, Albion on the 24th March. There was also one count for an attack on Hemlall Bahadur on the 22nd March, 2018.
They were also slapped with three robbery under arms charges committed on Sumindra Roopnarine, 65, on 21st March and on the 6th March, robbed Hector Corbin at Chesney Housing Scheme.
Jimeal Permaul of, Chesney Housing Scheme was also robbed of $25, 000, one silver bangle worth $8,000 and one silver ring worth $3,000 by the men.
During the court proceedings, the men claimed that they were brutalized by the police after they turned themselves over to police in company of their Attorney, Charandass Persaud a few days ago. They accused the ranks of beating them about their bodies causing them internal and external injuries.
They stated that they were taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after they pleaded with the police to do so.
Charandass Persaud, their Attorney who was absent from court had earlier on in the day relayed to the Magistrate that the police prevented him from speaking with his clients.
They are set to return to the Albion Magistrate’s Court on April 16, 2018.
Meanwhile , on Tuesday at the Albion Magistrate Court before Magistrate Renita Singh, Premchand Ramsohai called Akash, 22 of Ankerville Port Mourant was charged with eight counts of robbery under arms and discharging a loaded firearm. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
Also on Tuesday, he appeared at the Whim Magistrate Court and was charged with robbery under arms committed on Jankee Bisnauth.
A separate charge was also read for robbing Navini Deoki, 28, and Raveena Ram, 31. He was also charged with robbing Anthony Dudnauth, 35, and three others of cash, gold jewellery and a cellular phone at Ankerville, Port Mourant.
