Three men who were remanded for robbing a ranch up the Canje River have been granted bail by Magistrate Alex Moore in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
The men Timothy Sampson, 30, of Lot 12 Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice; Lawrence VanLewin, 24, of Sand Hill, Berbice River; and Rhondell Crawford, 21, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice are on trial on a joint charge of robbery under arms.
They are accused of robbing Bharrat Mahadeo of one solar panel; 24 sheep; 15 ducks; horse bit ; four lengths of rope; two torchlights; one cutlass; one radio and one Nokia cellphone, property of Krishna Persaud, on Friday, March 2, at Potocco Creek, Canje River
Magistrate Moore granted the men bail in the sum of $200,000 each and transferred the case to the Reliance Magistrate’s Court. This was despite strenuous objection from the Prosecution led by Inspector Bernard Brown.
Sampson, VanLewin, Crawford and three others, two of whom were shot dead by police in the Canje River, are accused of robbing the ranch, located in Canje River along with the workmen of Krishna Persaud, on Friday 2nd March.
On the day in question, at approximately 10:00 am police in ‘B’ Division acting on information of a robbery at Potocco Creek, Canje River, ventured to the area.
They intercepted a boat with Sampson and VanLewin in the Canje River. Based on further information, the ranks proceeded to a location where the robbery allegedly took place. There, they discovered all of the animals with their legs bound and the other stolen property loaded inside of a camouflaged aluminium boat.
Upon arriving at the scene, the ranks were confronted by the now dead Amar Bissoon and Indarjit Sham, who discharged several rounds at them. There was an exchange of gunfire and the two men were fatally wounded. They were later positively identified by the victims as members of the gang who committed the robbery.
A twelve-gauge pump action shotgun, a .32 pistol, eleven live cartridges, and five live.32 rounds were found in the possession of the bandits. Also, three spent cartridges and a .32 spent shell were retrieved at the scene.
All the men charged were identified positively by the victims of the robbery.
