A twenty-two-year-old labourer who allegedly stabbed his lover’s son to his left upper back after an argument over local wine was yesterday remanded to prison on a manslaughter charge.
Eon Charles, of Kariabo, Barima River, North West District, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
The unrepresented accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on March 22, last, at Kariabo, Barima River, in the North West District, he unlawfully killed Lawrence Leon.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield said that following the incident, police officers took the accused for medical attention then back to the scene of the crime after he was discharged from the hospital.
The court heard that while at the scene, the accused escaped from police custody but was hours later recaptured three miles away from the scene.
The prosecutor also based his objection on the fact that the accused has strong ties to Venezuela and if bail is granted he would likely flee the jurisdiction.
The prosecutor added that the accused, when arrested, gave the police a caution statement admitting to the offence.
According to reports, the accused, who lived with the mother of the dead man, were all at home drinking local wine.
According to information, about 18:00 hrs Leon and the accused had an argument over the said local wine, which resulted in Leon stabbing the accused to his left hand with a knife.
The accused then armed himself with a lance (Spear) and stabbed Leon to his left upper back.
Both men were rushed to the Barima Health Centre where they were attended to by a health care worker and subsequently escorted to the Mabaruma Hospital where the accused was treated and discharged. Leon underwent treatment at the institution but died hours later.
The matter was then reported and the accused was arrested and charged for the offence.
The Magistrate remanded the accused to prison and instructed him to make his next court appearance on May 21 at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
