A father drowned Saturday afternoon while trying to save his two daughters aged, four and five after the boat they were in capsized in the Essequibo River.
The dead man has been identified as Latchman Benjie, a farmer of Jawalla Village, Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven.
According to reports, Benjie and his two daughters went to his farm earlier in the day and were returning home to Waramadong in the afternoon.
Benjie and his two daughters were in a canoe when it capsized with them.
This publication was informed that after Benjie realized his daughters were drowning he pushed them as close as possible to shore.
A man who was nearby at the time heard the children screaming and upon looking into the water saw them holding on to mangroves and rescued them. By this time Benjie had disappeared.
According to information at the time when the boat capsized, Benjie was wearing long boots which may have caused him to drown.
Benjie’s body was pulled from the water early yesterday morning in the Kamarang River.
