A mason from Charlestown was yesterday remanded to prison after he was allegedly found with over five pounds of marijuana.
The accused, 31-year-old Devon Adams, made an appearance before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The allegation against Adams is that on March 11 at Lot 1137 Cummings Park, Georgetown, he had in his possession 2.510 kilograms of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Adams pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by the Magistrate. Attorney-at-Law Keoma Griffith, who is representing the defendant, in his application to secure bail for his client told the court that the alleged narcotics was found at a location where his client works and that he has no knowledge of the narcotics.
The lawyer further stressed that the alleged marijuana was found in a black bag on a fence, and at the time of its discovery there were multiple persons in close proximity to the bag, and it could have belonged to anyone.
However Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh strongly objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
The prosecutor said that the defendant, when arrested, gave the police a written caution statement admitting to the offence. He added that the police have enough evidence to convict the defendant and more charges will be instituted against him, since he was in possession of a hand grenade.
The court heard that investigation into the matter is still ongoing and the defendant will be charged for having the grenade in his possession without lawful authority.
The prosecutor’s objection was upheld by the Magistrate and the defendant was remanded to prison.
The father of two was instructed to make his next court appearance on April 5 when he will appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for assignment.
