Minibus operators stage protest against police crackdown on colourful decorations

Several operators parked their minibuses at the Square of the Revolution yesterday to protest the most recent crackdown by the police traffic department against colourful wraps.
Traffic Chief, Ramesh Ashram, said the buses were detained on Tuesday at Brickdam, but were released to give operators one week to remove the wraps so they can be issued with their road service license.
Operators stated that the wraps project a colourful depiction that adds to the tourism product of the country. According to one operator, he has four buses plying route 44; they all carry the wrap. He stated that it cost close $1M to add the wraps to all of his buses.
“This is asking too much of us because we are not out here committing crimes; we just want an opportunity to earn an honest dollar.
The passengers love the decorations and people look forward to seeing us. We are just asking the police to allow us to work while we work on a compromise,” a bus owner stated.
The owners pointed out that the police have gone after minibuses while allowing companies to keep their wraps.
The police remain firm on their decision, pointing out that the wraps cannot be reflected as a colour on the registration licence.
“We do not have an issue with the designs or the colour. They must follow the laws.
They can spray paint the designs onto the buses and the colours will be reflected on the official documents,” Ashram stated.
The operators are hoping for Government intervention.
