The Movement Against Parking Meters (MAPM) has called for Mayor Patricia Chase-Green and Town Clerk, Royston King to be held accountable for the mismanagement of Georgetown.
In a statement, the group classified the decision Monday by the mayor to throw out Councilor Sherod Duncan’s ‘no confidence’ motion against King as a well orchestrated stage show and nothing short of ludicrous.
“MAPM would like to make it clear that after an assessment of the conduct of the Mayor and Town Clerk, and taking into account the important nature of the role of the offices they hold, (the group) considers them both to not be fit and proper to hold such office,” MAPM stated.
MAPM called on the Local Government Commission and the Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan to act.
The group supported Councillor Duncan’s decision to table the ‘no confidence’ motion against King. The motion was thrown out by the Mayor at the council’s meeting on Monday when she accepted the legal advice provided by King’s attorney, Maxwell Edwards.
According to the group, the mayor’s decision left the Guyanese citizenry in nothing short of shock as they all watched basic concepts of democracy and good governance reduced to mere ashes.
While encouraging Duncan to bring a similar motion against the mayor, MAPM invited the public to join their silent protest today from 12 noon to 1 pm to register not only their support for Councillor Duncan, but also the unequivocal rejection of Chase-Green and King to continue as administrators of the city.
“The continued reckless decisions, nepotism, bullyism, cronyism and evidence of mounting corrupt transactions that do not pass even a basic transparency test has eroded any remaining trust the citizens of Georgetown held for the city’s chief administrators,” MAPM stated.
The council will today hold elections for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the year 2018.
