Dear Editor,
There is an old saying that ‘a drowning man will clutch at a straw’. What it means is that when hope of success is fading, people will try anything, no matter how unlikely it is that it will provide a solution.
At City Hall, with the end fast approaching on the reign of the ‘King of the City’ he has begun to do what he knows best and that is to launch a campaign to manipulate public opinion through false and misleading media postings.
Spearheading this campaign has been his trusted Protégé the current Public Relations Officer, who has come out screaming that two Councilors in particular have been constantly attacking the Chief Administrative Officer of the Council in very personal ways at statutory meetings and in the media.
What she seems not to understand, is that the public really wants to know what has happened to the other 28 Councilors? Are they oblivious to all the misconduct, dereliction and mismanagement of the Council by its administration? Or are they just paper tigers who are spineless and pigeon hearted and who prefer to let the City of Georgetown go to rack and ruin whilst a few immoral administrators benefit, rather than to stand up and speak out like their two other brave colleagues.
But the Public Relations Officer is hardly a moral beacon to lead this movement on behalf of her boss. With contentions of the Public Relations Division being overstaffed and a number of its members seen idling, texting and taking selfies all day long, and being a contributor of the big nepotism problem at the Council, with close relatives of hers working at the Public Health and other Departments at City Hall, one would have expected her to be less vocal and critical of the Councilors trying to bring sanity to City Hall. “People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones at other people’s glass houses”
The suggestion by this lady that “under the leadership of this administration, there has been a revitalizing of several systems necessary to provide municipal services to communities,” is nothing short of a sick joke that is diametrically different to the reality of Georgetown and certainly not hilarious.
On the contrary we have had attempts to take possession of green spaces without legal authority, the unlawful imposition of the outrageous parking meter systems, the awarding of contracts to the tune of more than a hundred million dollars without any tendering in the cemetery, and a complete lack of accountability in every other area of the Council’s operations.
Does the Council’s PRO really believe that the populace of Georgetown is unaware of the realities of the Georgetown City Council? Does she think that this media blitz will stave off the inevitable ‘Day of Reckoning’ that is so long overdue and which is coming to City Hall?
The PRO’s time would be better spent, helping to retrieve the missing documents for audit, helping to restore some shred of decency to City Hall, and telling her bosses to do the correct thing, which is to obey the laws of Guyana.
Sincerely,
Shanta Singh
