– Min of Social Protection
With a target of 280 parents for 2017, there were 411 parents who were able to benefit from the capacity building programme established under the Ministry of Social Protection.
The unit effectively guided and monitored the completion of parenting training programmes in Six Regions.
The six-week special parenting education programme sought to build capacity and improve the parenting skills of parents whose child/children were removed from their care due to maltreatment and neglect or parents whose children are at risk for removal.
This is to aid in the process of the deinstitutionalisation of children and preventing unnecessary separation of children from their biological families.
According to information from the Ministry of Social Protection, during the training, parents were exposed to knowledge of child development and non-violent methods of discipline and provided with assistance to overcome personal dysfunctions that are affecting their parenting role.
Some of the major topics addressed were parenting responsibilities, listening to my children, talking to my children, setting limits for my child, understanding my child’s misbehaviour and understanding punishment and discipline and being a good example to my children.
After the conference, the participants of the workshop and their families were monitored with the agency providing counselling and other forms of support.
The Unit was also tasked with overseeing the effective execution of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention & Empowerment Programme.
A programme designed to reduce the incidents and risks associated with sexual behaviour through the empowering of young women and men that come to the attention of the Childcare and Protection Agency, by increasing their knowledge of ways to prevent HIV, STDs and pregnancy and providing them with case work support for personal development.
One hundred and thirty-one young people were reached through the teen programme this year.
The National Commission for the Family functions under the Ministry of Social Protection and has a mandate to improve the quality of life in the Guyanese society through the promotion of stable and cohesive families.
In 2018, Family Support Services Team will endeavour to continue to monitor and evaluate cases assigned to the section; assess risk with a view to the closure of cases and to provide more family counselling outside of the parenting training programmes.
Additionally, as part of its programme for 2017, the CPA has launched the toddler reading programme which is aimed at introducing and encouraging reading in children at a young age.
