The 43-year-old man who allegedly killed his 73-year-old mother by setting her alight as she slept has been charged with her murder.
Dewan Dahri was remanded to prison on December 29, 2017, after appearing before Magistrate Peter Hugh in the Vigilance Magistrates Court.
The accused, who is said to be an alcoholic, allegedly committed the act on Christmas Day, at Lot 143 Gale Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara, where at the time he resided with his mother, Mengree Dahri called ‘Gladys’.
A police report stated that at around 10:00 hours on Christmas Day, a resident observed smoke emanating from the bottom flat of Mrs. Dahri’s two-storey house.
On checking, the resident found the elderly woman on a bed which was engulfed in flames.
With the assistance of public-spirited persons she was evacuated and the fire extinguished. However, Mrs. Dahri sustained extensive burns and succumbed on December 28.
The accused is scheduled to return to court on January 29.
