University Sees New Registry…expected to enhance staff interaction with students

The University of Guyana has seen a number of upgrades throughout the years, with the most recent project being the unveiling of a new building which will serve as the Campus’ Registry.

On Tuesday, the Turkeyen Campus saw the official opening of their new registry.
The event attracted the Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry; Vice Chancellor Prof. Ivelaw Griffith; Registrar Dr. Nigel Gravesande; Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Engagement, Michael Scott; Deputy Vice Chancellor PACE Dr. Paloma Mohamed; Assistant Chief Education Officer, Owen Pollard and university staff amongst others.
The new building which was funded by the Ministry of Education upon completion amounted to a sum of $86.3M.
It is fully equipped with the necessary materials such as laptops that will allow the staff of the registry to successfully and effectively complete their day to day activities.
The completely air conditioned building is oblique to the former building. It is set to accommodate 59 permanent employees and a few temporary staff.
According to the registrar, Dr. Nigel Gravesande, the university saw the need for a new building because “the population has grown, from the 1064 in 1964 to 8165 in 2017… There was need for a student focus and friendly environment.”
He also added, “The new registry will not be providing new services but it is expected to improve the current services, and provide a better environment for a greater level of student integration and student services.”
“It is not the building but the services that will enhance greater relationship and interaction with the student.”
One student stated that “since the staff have relocated to a new location and are now more comfortable, we are expecting them to be more efficient and effective at their jobs.”
