DEAR EDITOR,
It was with what may be regarded as “perverse delight” that I read your recent letter which stated that “Trinidadians did not like Guyanese”. I have heard the same said of EVERY Caribbean island.
In the past, when I took annual cruises on American ships, stopping daily at various Caribbean ports, at every stop, I always introduced myself as Guyanese by birth, followed by “I know you don’t like us but…” This ALWAYS produced a hearty laugh all round. I then invited them to choose a wrapped ‘sweetie’ from the paper bag I carried around with me. The ice was immediately broken.
Foreigners, even native Americans, always seem to appreciate anything British. Children ‘pounced’ on sweets whenever I mentioned they were “all the way from London, England”. It was a joy to see their faces light up.
In later years, it was a bit sad to learn that some children were warned not to accept sweets from any stranger. Instead I refrained altogether. From then on, I offered some to adults where I stayed, brought the rest back and handed them to my sweetie-loving husband! They disappeared pronto.
