Cadet Officer Glenroy Campbell was yesterday jailed for two years for shooting a pillion rider in the face, while he and other ranks were performing patrol duties in Sophia more than four years ago.
Campbell, who was represented by Attorney-at-Law Gwendolyn Bristol, was convicted on the charge which alleged that on March 9, 2013, at Greater Georgetown, he discharged a loaded firearm at Abdul Cort, with intent to maim, disable, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.
The sentencing was handed down by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts.
The State which was represented by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Telford contended that on the day in question, Cort was the pillion rider on a motorcycle that was heading in Sophia where Cadet Officer Campbell was performing patrol duties.
After observing that none of the riders was wearing helmets, Cadet Officer Campbell attempted to intercept the motorcycle, but the rider rode away. It was then that Cadet Officer Campbell discharged a round in the direction of the motorcycle. Coincidently, Cort who was looking back at the said time, was struck in the nose.
